Giant's Causeway from Belfast: Day Tour or Drive Yourself?
Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors without a car, the Giant’s Causeway full-day guided trip from Belfast is the easy answer: it costs €29.21, lasts 9.5 hours and is rated 4.8 from 7,816 reviews. Driving yourself makes sense if you want more time at the stones, more than one stop of your own choosing, or you are three or four people sharing a car.
How far it really is
The Causeway is about 60 miles from Belfast, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road without stops. Tours turn that into an 8.5 to 9.5 hour day because they stop along the Antrim coast, so the drive itself is not the problem; the time at the stones is what you are choosing.
What you pay at the Causeway itself
This is the part tour listings rarely explain. According to the National Trust, the coastline and the stones are open dawn to dusk and walking there is free. The Visitor Experience ticket is a separate purchase: The price depends on season and time slot: for 2026 expect roughly £14 to £18 for an adult and £7 to £9 for a child aged 5 to 17, and there is a family ticket. The National Trust booking page shows the exact amount. It includes reserved parking, guided storytelling, audio guides and the visitor centre. The centre itself is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. From the visitor centre, the Blue Trail to the stones is under a mile.
If you drive and do not want the ticket, the National Trust points to the Causeway Coast Way car park at Innisfree Farm, £12 a vehicle paid through the JustPark app, with a walk down to the coast. Before booking any tour, check on its booking page whether the visitor centre ticket is included. We could not confirm that for every tour, and it changes what you are comparing.
The main options
| Option | Length | Price | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-day guided trip: Causeway, Carnlough Harbour, Dark Hedges, Bushmills, Carrickfergus, Dunluce Castle | 9.5 hours | €29.21 | 4.8, 7,816 reviews |
| Guided day tour with castles along the Causeway Coastal Route | 8.5 hours | €28.38 | 4.7, 3,146 reviews |
| Morning half-day tour | 5 hours | €30 | 4.8, 709 reviews |
| Afternoon half-day tour | 5 hours | €33 | 4.6, 1,053 reviews |
| Full-day guided tour, Dark Hedges and Dunluce Castle | 7 hours | €40 | 4.4, 882 reviews |
All prices are per person. The €40 tour is the dearest of the group but is rated lower than the €29 one, so price alone tells you little; read the itinerary on the booking page.
Full day or half day?
The full-day tours add coastal stops: Carnlough Harbour, Cushendun Caves in the castles tour, the Dark Hedges, Dunluce Castle. The half-day tours go to the point. If the Causeway is your reason for coming and you have only a morning or afternoon, a half day works, but five hours, once the coach has travelled out and back, leaves little time on site. The full-day tour covers more for a similar price, and with 4.8 from 7,816 reviews it is by far the most-reviewed of the group.
Cruise passengers have their own option, the Causeway Express shore excursion, a 5.5 hour tour with port pickup and drop-off for €41.73. See our Giant’s Causeway tour listings for all the departures.
When driving is better
A hire car lets you walk the stones early, before coaches arrive, and add stops a coach would skip. Northern Ireland drives on the left, and the roads along the coast are narrow in places, so be honest about how you feel after a flight. You will also pay for parking and fuel, and we do not quote hire prices because they swing with the season. You can compare hire cars for Belfast and check the excess and deposit on the booking page before you commit.
The Dark Hedges are about an hour from Belfast and 20 minutes from the Causeway by car. One travel guide reports that the road itself is closed to traffic and visitors park at a signed car park, so check on the day. The rope bridge at Carrick-a-Rede is a seasonal attraction, taken down in winter according to the tourist board, so confirm with the National Trust before you build a day around it.
Our pick
On your own, with no car and a single day: take the full-day guided trip. With a car and a group of three or more: drive, but book the Visitor Experience ticket in advance. If you also want the filming sites, see Game of Thrones locations from Belfast.
